University students may gain credits for volunteer work
By TAN EE LOO
KUALA LUMPUR: University students active in community work may be given credits to motivate more of them to take part in community service, Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said.
He said the ministry had been looking into the possibility of awarding students, who were willing to volunteer their time and commitment to help others.
“We have a programme to recognise the sportsmen in university. However, I know there are some students who go to hospitals in the weekends to help out.
“They are just as committed (as the sportsmen). Giving them credits can be one way of motivating more students to take part in volunteer work,” he said at a Hari Raya and Hari Merdeka celebrations at the Multimedia College in KL on Thursday.
